As U.S. and Middle East LNG exporters appear poised to be the dominant long-term players in the global market, competition for Asian buyers willing to pay for the next wave of supply could be heating up.

Qatar on Sunday advanced plans to increase the country’s LNG production capacity by 85% from current levels, upping a bet that more natural gas will be needed as progress at other liquefaction projects appears to slow.

Natural gas demand has not slowed, and that’s helping to grease the skids for export contracts, ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods said Wednesday.

State-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP) has dished out an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth more than $2 billion to expand the liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and loading facilities for the giant North Field East (NFE) project.

The natural gas export market is more difficult and complex to steer than for oil and definitely not for the weak of heart, Qatar Petroleum (QP) CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said Tuesday.
