A rupture that occurred on a section of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) during a May 1 pressure test was caused by a defective fitting manufactured by a third party, a new independent report has found.

Pushing back against concerns raised by project opponents, Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC (MVP) said its handling of a recent failed pressure test demonstrates that safety protocols are working as intended.

As Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC (MVP) seeks to conclude a protracted construction phase and enter service this month, the developer recently experienced a setback in Virginia when a section of pipe ruptured during hydrostatic testing.

San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) has reduced the number of previously designated natural gas transmission pipeline segments requiring hydrostatic testing and put in place a separate gas operations group in its combination utility, according to a PG&E spokesperson.

NGPL said its hydrostatic testing on the Amarillo Mainline #3 north and south of Station 195 in Washington County, KS is running into delays and is now expected to be completed Aug. 15 instead of this past Friday as previously scheduled. ITS/AOR and Secondary out-of-path services are unavailable in the affected area during this work. The pipeline also postponed a caliper pig run from Station 104 to Station on the Amarillo Mainline #3 from July 27-28 until Aug. 17. No impact on service is anticipated from this pig run.

Florida Gas Transmission said a Zone 1 constraint resulting fromhydrostatic testing immediately downstream of Station 4 in MatagordaCounty, TX will be completed by Thursday and it is accepting all Zone1 nominations for that gas day. The maintenance period, which beganOct. 20, 2000 and was originally scheduled to end Dec. 1, 2000, wasextended several times (see Daily GPI, Jan.24).
