A North Dakota district judge has temporarily blocked a Biden administration rule that would require U.S. exploration and production (E&P) companies to reduce natural gas flaring from wells on federal and tribal lands.

Natural gas and oil production in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) could be disrupted before the end of the year unless the U.S. Department of Commerce prepares a new assessment to avoid adverse effects to endangered species, industry groups are warning.

Widespread blackouts in early May across 21 of Mexico’s 32 states are a troubling sign ahead of summer months, which is when the nation’s electricity demand peaks, according to three industry experts who spoke with NGI’s Mexico GPI.

“My first hope for the next presidential administration in Mexico, whoever wins, is that they are receptive and listen to the voices of the sector,” Beatriz Marcelino, CEO of Grupo CIITA, told NGI’s Mexico GPI. “During the first years of this administration, the doors were closed for us and members of the sector and we weren’t allowed to participate. This is no longer the case, and we hope that continues into the next administration.”

Oneok Inc. is aiming to take a final investment decision (FID) by the middle of this year on the 2.8 Bcf/d Saguaro Connector natural gas pipeline. 

“A lot of the potential developments that nearshoring will bring are going to need access to natural gas,” Diana Pineda, a partner at Gónzalez Calvillo law firm in Mexico City, told NGI’s Mexico GPI.  “And the truth is, we’ve now gone several years without a new natural gas pipeline.”
